The Bruce Museum

The Bruce museum in Greenwich that I visited didn't allow pictures to be taken. So this picture that I display was the only area to take pictures, which was the front entry way.

This is Robby the Robot. I remember seeing him in a quick shot in the movie Gremlins. He definitely scared me when I was little, but I'm ok now! lol He first appeared in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet. He was also seen in 25 other films and movies. I was surprised to know that the original Robby was created to hold a real actor inside! It took more than 2 months to install the 2,600 feet of electrical wiring that was used to control his flashing, spinning and moving parts. This is a replicate and was made by hand using the original molds and blue prints.

This museum was much different from any of the other museums I visited. It seemed more like a child's museum. There were geos and different types of rock and land formations. They also displayed wildlife and other such earthy things. Moving to the other rooms, they were filled with robots that are visiting for now.

They had a lot of interesting things but I didn't see any of the traditional art work.

Actually it is a science and an art museum rolled into one... There was a major exhibition of Navajo Textiles on display... That might have made a great paper...

"Navajo Textiles from the Bruce Museum
December 8, 2007 - March 22, 2008

The exhibition will explore an important period in the history of Navajo artistry as traditional methods of weaving where replaced by technological advances and the growth of a commercial interest in Navajo craft. Ten stunning examples of pieces are on view that were created during the Transitional Period (1865-1895), when weaving was increasingly aimed at outside markets and production became focused on creating rugs rather than blankets. The exhibition is supported by the Theobald Foundation and the Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition Fund."
